The Birches School Curriculum is currently under review and in an exciting phase of development. We have set ourselves the challenge of designing a more appropriate curriculum for our pupils; one which is personalised and ensures that each and every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

We are creating a curriculum that recognises and develops the whole individual and focuses on developing the key skills of Communication, Cognition, Physical Development and Personal & Social Development (including self-help & life-skills). These are all key skills that equip children and young people for life beyond the school

Our curriculum will reflect and be responsive to the different learning styles of the pupils and build on individual strengths and interests. We hope to create meaningful opportunities both inside school and out in the wider community which will enable our learners to make sense of the world they live in and transition into the wider community successfully with purpose.

The new curriculum will consist of three distinct learning pathways linked and supported by a whole school thematic approach. The three curriculums are:

Pre - Formal Curriculum (P1- P3)

The pre-formal curriculum is for pupils with profound and complex needs who need a special approach to their learning. This curriculum focuses on how best the pupils learn and celebrates the different abilities and achievements of each individual

Semi - Formal Curriculum (P4 - P6)

The semi-formal curriculum recognises those pupils that have a range of complex learning difficulties and disabilities. The curriculum is designed to support active engagement through a personalised learning approach including purposeful play

Formal Curriculum (P7 – National Curriculum)

The formal curriculum is for pupils who are working at P7 & P8 and lower National Curriculum levels. This group of pupils will access some focussed formal learning via individual subjects such as Maths, English and Science.
